Standing

Grip fighting, stance, takedown entries, and balance management before the fight goes to the ground.

What this phase means

Before the fight goes to the ground, the standing phase is a battle of grips, stance, distance, and entries. You either control the engagement or you react to it.

What to recognize

  • +Who has the dominant tie or grip
  • +Whose stance is lower and more balanced
  • +Which way pressure is being directed
  • +Where the level changes are happening
  • +When the opponent over-commits or freezes

Beginner mistake

Standing tall, hands low, and reacting only after the takedown attempt has already started.

Intermediate mistake

Winning the grip but stalling there — collecting ties without ever converting them into an entry, throw, or shot.
