Coach the environment, not the move.
A practical playbook for running a CLA session, from the 2-minute opener to the 5-minute debrief.
Session template (60 min)
Pick the problem (2 min)
Open the class with one specific problem. "Tonight: bottom side control. Everyone gets stuck flat under pressure." One problem per session beats a tour of five.
Frame the phase (1 min)
Name the phase out loud. "This is the Escaping phase." That single label gives students a folder to put the rest of the session in.
Demo the start position (2 min)
Show the exact start, the win condition, and the reset rule. Don't teach a move. The game teaches the move.
Play short rounds (20–30 min)
3–5 minute rounds, reset to start on every win or stall. Rotate partners every 2 rounds. Volume of reps in the problem matters more than length of round.
Scale the constraint (ongoing)
If top is dominating, add a constraint that helps bottom (e.g. "top hands inside only"). If a pair has solved it, tighten the constraint. Coach by adjusting the game, not by interrupting it.
Debrief (5 min)
Two questions only: "What did you notice?" and "What would you try next time?" Let athletes verbalize the pattern. Skill they describe is skill they own.
Scaling cheat sheet
Too easy for top
- ›Restrict the dominant grip or hand placement.
- ›Force top to win by a specific submission family.
- ›Shorten the time to win, or add a points cost for stalling.
Too hard for bottom
- ›Loosen the win condition (recover half-guard counts).
- ›Give bottom a free frame or grip to start.
- ›Cap top's intensity (e.g. "70%, no scrambles").
Mixed-level class
- ›Same game, different constraints per pair.
- ›Pair up by belt; rotate within belt for 2 rounds, across belts for 1.
- ›Use the higher belt as the constraint-giver for that round.
Common pitfalls
Teaching the move before the game
Fix: Let the problem show up first. Demo position and rules. Coach inside the reps, not before.
Rounds too long
Fix: Long rounds drift. Keep rounds short and resets frequent, that's where the reps live.
Too many constraints at once
Fix: One constraint per round. Layer in another only after the first becomes invisible.
Coaching by interrupting
Fix: Adjust the constraint instead of stopping the action. The environment is your microphone.
