Guard Passing
Getting around the legs, clearing frames, and controlling the hips to establish a top position.
What this phase means
Passing is the work of clearing the legs and frames so you can land in a pin. It is less about a single move and more about reading where the guard is and where it is going.
What to recognize
- +Which leg or frame is the active barrier
- +Whether the opponent is reaching or retreating
- +When their hip is square vs. turned away
- +The moment a frame breaks or a foot lands inside
- +Whether pressure or movement opens the lane
Beginner mistake
Forcing one pass into a wall — bashing the same knee shield without ever switching direction or attacking grips.
Intermediate mistake
Passing without controlling the inside space — getting to side control but giving up underhooks and frames on arrival.
